Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis: PGD
What is PGD? Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis, PGD for short, is a diagnostic test for detection of chromosomal/genetic abnormalities in the embryos used for in vitro fertilization therapy. While it is a very promising test, it is limited by the high cost associated with the procedure, as well as some limitations in the diagnostics that have not been fully worked out. Many fertility clinics in Florida do not offer this option, but BocaFertility recommends it to those patients at risk of transmitting a chromosomal abnormality or a single gene defect like cystic fibrosis. PGD testing involves the removal of one or two cells from an early, eight cell stage embryo. Sophisticated procedures are used to check the cells for genetic abnormalities. Only normal embryos are then implanted in the uterus using IVF. The testing has, as of yet, not been shown as helpful for patients with repeated IVF failures, older patients, or patients with recurrent miscarriages. False negatives of five to seven percent have also been reported.
