Donor Egg In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

Donor egg IVF is an option if you are in your 40s or have been told by your physician that you have low ovarian reserve with poor quality eggs. You may have had several failed IVF cycles in which the quality of the embryos was poor. 

If you are a single man or same sex couple, the path to parenthood may include donor egg IVF and gestational surrogacy. Donor egg IVF treatment is sometimes considered to avoid transmission of a genetic disease to the children.

You may select an egg donor from our clinic’s available donor list or you may choose to use an independent organization to help you with your search for a donor.

Known Donor

Using a known egg donor, such as a sister or friend, requires that you have a strong and healthy relationship with the donor.

Egg Banks

More recently, frozen eggs obtained from egg banks have been successfully utilized. In 2021 alone, over 3,000 babies were born in the United States using frozen eggs.

  • A $7,000-8,000 donor fee is paid by the recipient to a lawyer who prepares the legal contract.
  • Donor egg agencies charge a fee for their services in addition to the donor’s compensation.
  • Egg banks typically charge $16,000-27,000 for 6-8 frozen eggs.

  • The egg donor is asked to complete a detailed questionnaire about her personal, medical, obstetrical, surgical and genetic history.
  • The egg donor is also required to have a thorough physical examination, psychological evaluation and counseling, blood tests for genetic diseases, such as cystic fibrosis, and infectious disease screening.

Prior to beginning treatment your doctor will order a hysterosalpingogram (HSG) and a Saline Infusion Sonography (SIS) to see if there is any uterine or tubal abnormality which may interfere with embryo transfer and implantation. A mock trial transfer will be performed at the same time to make sure that the embryo transfer will proceed smoothly and to measure the optimal uterine location for transferring the embryos.

What is a Sonohysterogram or Saline Infusion Sonography (SIS)?

In this test, a vaginal ultrasound is performed while saline is injected into the uterus. Any abnormality such as fibroids, polyps, scar tissue or uterine malformations, which may interfere with embryo implantation, can be easily identified during the test. The procedure takes only a few minutes to complete and is associated with little, if any, discomfort.

In a normal test the walls of the endometrial cavity are smooth and no abnormalities are seen within the saline filling the uterus.

When the test is abnormal, the uterine cavity has an irregular outline indicative of endometrial polyps.

The donor is given daily hormone injections to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs.

During this phase, you will be given transdermal estrogen for about 2 weeks to prepare your uterus (the recipient uterus) for embryo implantation.

Vaginal ultrasound examination will be performed to make sure that the thickness of the lining of the uterus (endometrium) is thick enough for the embryo to implant. Ideally, the endometrial lining should have a “triple line” appearance and be over 8 mm thick.

  • The donor is carefully monitored with ultrasounds and blood tests until her eggs are ready for ovulation.
  • The donor is given HCG injection to trigger ovulation and her eggs will be retrieved about 35 hours later.
  • After the HCG injection, the donor will begin making progesterone, which is crucial for the final phase of endometrial preparation for embryo implantation. At the same time, the recipient begins treatment with progesterone injections or suppositories, so that the recipient uterus and the donor uterus are in sync, both at the same stage of development and both equally capable of supporting the pregnancy.
  • During egg retrieval, multiple eggs (oocytes) are removed from the donor’s ovaries and taken to the laboratory where they will be fertilized with your partner’s sperm. The embryos are checked daily and you will be given a daily update from our IVF nurses.
  • The embryos will be transferred into the recipient 6 days after retrieval at the blastocyst stage.
